Exceptional late-Victorian mourning necklace featuring hand-cut black onyx or jet plaques joined by solid 14-karat yellow gold rings. Unmarked but Tested. Each onyx/jet link is faceted and inlaid with diamond-shaped 14K gold panels, each set with tiny natural seed pearls. The design reflects fine 19th-century craftsmanship and the aesthetic elegance of the mourning era, circa 1875–1890.
This necklace fastens with an early spring-ring clasp in 14K gold, original to the piece. It displays beautiful balance, fine detail, and the quiet sophistication characteristic of the period’s high-style jewelry.
Measurements:
• Length: 26½ inches
• Onyx plaques: approx. 1 inch each
• Gold rings: approx. 6 mm diameter
• Weight: 41.2 grams
Condition:
Excellent antique condition with expected light wear from age. Under magnification, the onyx plaques show a few tiny pin dot nicks, and faint polishing lines consistent with over a century of careful use. One at the end near clasp has a small scratch as shown. I do not think its a crack but look at the photos. All stones remain glossy, intact, and securely set, with no cracks or repairs noted. The seed pearls are original and well-matched, and the 14K gold components retain a warm, natural patina.
